Application monitoring ensures that your application is running. Unlike low-level network and system probes, high-level monitors are capable of checking true use cases.

Monitors are usually installed for a few generic scenarios and for highly sensitive operations. You would for example at least have a monitor that logs in to the application and looks around the homepage. You may have an additional monitor ensuring that your sales quotes on the web are being properly registered in your CRM.

FTP, SMTP, POP, HTTP, DNS

Unlike system problems used by many administrators, monitors can verify complex and inter-system behaviour. It would be no problem to watch a process which starts as an FTP upload, and is then shuffled between multiple machines before the final action is performed.
